Up and Down

The hidden adventures in Barnett's Demesne were experienced by the 4th/24th East Belfast Scouts and Explorer Scouts on 14 February 2008.  Around 20 Scouts and Explorers visited the activities on offer at Belfast Activity Centre.

On turning the corner from the park into the stableyard, the scouts were amazed to see a what looked like a cross between a climbing frame and an abseiling tower, and a mound concealing a warren of caves.  After a warm up, which stretched muscles, and kept brains sharp, the scouts donned their boiler suits and harnesses.

Half were challenged to go deep under the ground and find their way around the caving system; the other half were challenged to go as high as possible, climbing up the vertical assault course at least 25' into the air.  All had a go at climbing and belaying and racing each other into the air.  Once all the climbers had tried the assault course, rock climbing skills were put to the test on the different climbing walls.

After about an hour at the activity, the groups changed round.  At the end, all got to exit the cave via the waterfilled tunnel.

Scouts returned home having enjoyed themselves and having got a little damp.
